The Mainlander’s Second Annual Fundraiser

fundraiser collage

The Mainlander has been covering municipal politics from a critical perspective for four years, and our last year has been spent digging deeper into the politics of the housing crisis in Vancouver. The writing community and editorial collective of The Mainlander has expanded a lot recently, which has allowed us to cover overlapping issues of colonialism, racism, gentrification and policing in our city. But we want to keep growing and we need your support!

Last year’s fundraiser was a seriously good time, and we used the money we raised to provide stipends to a wide range of writers, to editors for administrative work, and to fund the costs for a series of free public panels. Now we want to pay more writers and pay them better, as well as compensate editors to get stories and essays about these issues out to the people of Vancouver. To make all this happen, please join us on May 23rd at the Russian Hall.

Tickets
Tickets are $20-$50 sliding scale, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Buy an additional ticket and subsidize someone else’s dinner, even if you can’t attend. Ten seats at the very least will be reserved for people on low-incomes and we hope that these seats will be subsidized by those with better incomes. Tickets include a vegetarian dinner and a drink.

You can purchase your ticket through the our Brown Paper event page (http://mainlander2014.brownpapertickets.com/), or pay in cash to one of the editors. You can also transfer money directly into our Vancity bank account (please message us for details). Lastly, make sure to buy your tickets ahead of time – last year the event was sold out.

Accessibility
The main hall is accessible (wheelchair ramp). The lower level is not accessible (4 steps, no ramp) and because the bathroom is located on the lower level, there is no wheelchair access to the bathroom. However, Ray Cam Community Centre next door has an accessible bathroom open until 10pm.

Childcare
Childcare will be available on site, please send an email to mainlander.hub@gmail.com and confirm with us if you need child care. Children of all ages are welcome!

We hope to see you on May 23rd,

Yours truly,
